As I sat down to write this, I had a much different idea of what the article would be like. In fact, this is the first time I can remember where the last thing I wrote was the opening paragraph. This article is short, but it is important in this time of disinformation which is killing people and endangering American democracy.
On Tuesday during a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul tried to match scientific wits with Dr. Anthony Fauci. Both are physicians by training; that’s where the similarity of qualifications ends.
Paul is an ophthalmologist who at best has had a limited practice since his taking a seat in the Senate in January of 2011as part of the first class of Tea Party congressional office holders. Fauci is 80 years old, an immunologist and has been in constant practice basically his entire adult life including participating in some world class research.
Paul is “board certified” by his own Board which he created in 2003. Fauci is globally recognized for his work in controlling infectious diseases including AIDS.
Committee Chair Patty Murray had to consistently verbally restrain Paul as he constantly interrupted Fauci’s replies to his statements. An unfortunate reality of communications is that it takes much more time to refute a lie than to tell one. At one point Fauci resorted to what I call a Harry Truman – he told the truth on him (in this case Paul) – when he told Paul, “You do not know what you’re talking about.”
Paul is basically the Jim Jordan of the Senate and just wants to throw enough bombs to insure coverage on right wing media with no regard for the America, the world, truth or decorum. I’m sure he enhanced his hero status among the least common denominator of the electorate.
You have to ask yourself if Rand Paul would be in his position if his father wasn’t a famous twelve term member of the House of Representatives who unsuccessfully (but with much publicity) ran for president three times. My answer is a resounding No! This leads me to believe that one of the major reasons that Paul has become a huge Donald Trump defender is that both owe their success to being members of the Lucky Sperm Cell Club and little else.
You can make up your own mind as to who to believe and who won the battle of scientific wits. My mind is made up and, since I was familiar with both individuals, it didn’t take a lot of thought.

I’m impressed that Fauci kept his composure. I’d have been throwing pencils, or whatever else I could find, at that obnoxious moron.
