Jeff Sessions is gone. There are rumors of Kirstjen Nielsen, John Kelly and Wilbur Ross getting canned in the very near future. My reaction is summed up by today’s sarcastic but truthful headline. Let’s explore.
Trump’s White House personnel decisions have been less than stellar to say the least. Does anyone miss Mike Flynn, Rex Tillerson, Reince Priebus, Scott Pruitt or Tom Price? Do you envision the days when you will lament the loss of Nikki Haley? I have to admit a part of me misses Sean Spicer; he was so pitifully funny. Remember any presidential candidate’s first significant hiring decision is a running mate. Was Mike Pence really the best available person?
Far from draining the swamp Trump has populated Washington with even more dangerous creatures and he is the one plugging the drain. I was alive for the Nixon and Reagan administrations and they were squeaky clean compared to the Trump administration. If I have history correct the only administration to compare with this one to in terms of corruption is Ulysses S. Grant’s and that was in the 19th century.
With the possible exception of Secretary of Defense James Mattis what Cabinet loss would concern me? Steve Mnuchin at Treasury; what’s the loss there except for photo-ops with his trophy wife who he lavishes taxpayer money on? Would I mourn the loss of the anti-public education Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos? No! The furniture industry might hate to see Ben Carson leave HUD but I don’t think the American people would shed a tear. Does anyone really think Energy Secretary Rick Perry was the brightest light bulb available for that position? (Sorry for the bad “pun”.) Gina Haspel at CIA might be difficult to replace. Hopefully there aren’t too many torture experts available. I could go on but you get the idea.
Hiring has never been one of Trump’s strong suits. I offer Paul Manafort, George Papadopoulos, Rick Gates and Michael Cohen as examples. What do all these Trump hires have in common? They are all in some stage of felony litigation; on the defendant end of it.
When you hear rumors or reports of some Trump Cabinet officer or White House staffer being fired don’t fret about it. More importantly don’t be distracted from the real evil; like say, illegally and unconstitutionally appointing an Acting Attorney General in an attempt to obstruct justice. With one possible exception, who in Trump’s Cabinet or White House staff would be a great loss?
