Q: What do you do if you write political op-eds and you are waiting for news to break? A: You write a catch up article.
What The People Want
A Washington Post – ABC News poll showed that by a nearly 2:1 margin Americans want the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v Wade and overturn the Texas abortion law. My guess is that the Court will do pretty much the opposite. The current Court’s majority cares little for public opinion, the Constitution or precedent.
What this poll proves is that the self-proclaimed Silent Majority and Moral Majority are really just a vocal and obnoxious minority.
Misuse Of Funds
An audit report accused Iowa’s Republican Governor Kim Reynolds of using nearly $450,000 in coronavirus relief to pay for staff salaries and then concealed the spending. I guess that just proves that Republicans cannot be tusted to take care of your money or your life.
Eyes On Texas
Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott is planning on running for reelection (assuming he can win the GOP primary) and that race just got a lot more interesting on Monday with the not unexpected announcement that Democrat Beto O’Rourke was entering the race.
The eyes of the political world will be on Texas in 2022 and a ton of money will pour into that race in the interim. I have to favor a Republican and in political time there are light years until November of 2022, but a Beto win wouldn’t be a complete shocker.
Another Trump Coverup
The existence of a 2019 American airstrike in Syria that killed dozens of civilians just surfaced in the last few days. The Trump administration had a nasty habit (you have to conclude it was policy) of simply ignoring things that would have a negative perception if they became public knowledge. How many other shoes will fall? I think the late John McCain may have underestimated things when he metaphorically referred to the Trump scandals as a centipede. Centipedes only have 100 legs.
The Trump administration may well yet make the Grant administration look like a bunch of choirboys.
A New NFL?
NFL is largely understood to stand for the National Football League. Recently it sounds more like the Nonsense Football League. Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers was fined $14,650 for repeated violations of the league’s COVID protocols. Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb was fined $15,450 for three separate uniform violations and $10,300 for an end zone wave.
Rodgers is a household name and white; Lamb is neither. Rodgers put people’s lives at risk. Lamb annoyed a market segment the NFL is afraid of offending.
He Is Still Very Lucky
In the stiffest sentence handed down to date for a 1/6 insurrectionist Scott Fairlamb was sentenced to 41 months in prison for punching a Capital police officer. In my younger days I had a lot of buddies who were police officers. They didn’t talk a lot of shop with civilians but from the little I gleaned if someone had landed a punch on one of them the 41 months might seem like a picnic compared to the “other actions”.
Hitting a cop, regardless of what force they are a member of, is both inexcusable and down right stupid!
The Third Dot
This is a story that seems to get lost in the shuffle but I have a feeling there is something here. During the 2016 campaign there was some mysterious communication between a server registered to the Trump organization and one registered to Alfa Bank (a Russian bank). You are probably dusting off the cobwebs of your mind and saying that is old news; you are correct.
Recently it was reported that a third server registered to Spectrum Health was involved in the mysterious communications. On the surface while a bit unusual that seems innocent enough. If you dig just a bit you will find that the CEO of Spectrum Health is Dick DeVos, a major Trump and GOP donor. He is the husband of Betsy DeVos who went on to become Trump’s Secretary of Education, and the brother-in-law of Erik Prince of Blackwater fame and a beer in the Seychelles.
To paraphrase Shakespeare, something is rotten and it’s not in Denmark.
This One Is Really Scary!!!!!!
I saved this one for my parting shot. If it doesn’t remind you of the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe then I suggest you do some history reading. Elected Republican officials including Texas Governor Abbott are suggesting burning books. I know a lot of them are insane but the really scary part is that they have a following on this.
Maybe it’s because I’m currently rereading George Orwell’s 1984 (I first read it back in the late 60s) but this comes right out of it. Furthermore, it resembles the convenient rhetoric of the Trump administration. For years I have contended that the promotion of ignorance is one of the pillars holding up the current Republican party; could you ask for a clearer illustration?
OK, well I cleaned up some and probably left you intrigued and/or nauseous.

Oh Larry, you forgot about Liz Cheney. She just got evicted from the Wyoming Republican Party. I just threw that one in there ‘cuz it’s good for a belly laugh.
