Reputation, actions and associations. That about sums up Val Demings in my mind.

Val is the Democratic Candidate for the Senate in Florida. She is taking on the Republican incumbent; never an easy assignment in a battleground state. Politically Florida is pretty much three states. The north is sold red except for the area around Florida State (Demings’ alumna mater). South Florida used to be reliably blue but in recent years the Republicans have made significant inroads into the Cuban-American population in metro Miami. The middle, or I-4 corridor, is the battleground that ends up deciding most Florida statewide races and Demings’ home turf.

Demings’ background indicates that she knows people on and at several levels. Her first job out of college was as a social worker. 18 months later she joined the Orlando Police Department as a patrol officer. Over 20 years later she retried as Chief of Police. Currently she represents an Orlando area House district.

In 2020 she was one of the finalists for the Vice Presidential nod. For non political nerds she came into the national spotlight as one of the impeachment mangers in Donald Trump’s first impeachment.

I think it is fair to paint her as a left of center practical patriot.Mainly a progressive she tempers her positions a bit to open herself to practicality. With her diverse wealth of life experiences – which include what comes along with being married to the current Orlando mayor – she is uniquely equipped to serve both the forgotten and the establishment while keeping the nation’s best interests front of mind.

Let’s look at her “congressional report card”. She received ratings of 100 from NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood while getting an “F” from the Susan B. Anthony List. Sounds like she is in the mainstream of American thinking.

The ACLU also gave her a 100. I’d say she is on the correct (and majority) side of the inequity discussion.

The League of Conservation Voters gave her a 97. It’s not perfect but obviously she realizes that the environment is threatened and that we need to do things to save the planet, at least for human occupation as we know it that is.

With her background guns are a particularly interesting topic. Demings is for common sense gun safety without infringing on the rights of law abiding citizens. I’d call that common sense while being cognizant of the issues and respectful of American traditions. For that she received an “F” from the NRA. Be proud of that grade Mrs. Demings!

Demings is on record in opposition to the current Senate filibuster rule. In other words, she is willing to defend America against a handful of obstructions.

I’ve had many good fortunes in my life, among them is that I count several Deltas as friends. Demings is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Deltas, like everyone else, are individuals but that said I’ve never met a Delta who was a bad person.
