The Endorsement Of Tim Kaine endorses Democratic Senator Tim Kaine for reelection in Virginia. You may be saying to yourself here Larry goes again endorsing a moderate Democrat. This endorsement is well earned but it also illustrates the nature of American politics in 2018. Let’s explore my reasoning.

Control of the Senate is in play (although, at this point, I still feel the Republicans will hold on) and the Democrats need to retain almost every seat they currently hold. This endorsement is well earned and not a lesser of two evils or only viable alternative choice. That being said Kaine’s Republican opponent is most accurately described as a white supremacist. Nothing more need be said on that subject!

Kaine has an extensive Democratic pedigree in public service. He was mayor of Richmond, Virginia, Lt. Governor and Governor of Virginia, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, was elected to the Senate in 2012 and was the Vice Presidential nominee in 2016. The most interesting, illustrative and useful thing in his non-political past is that he did volunteer work in Honduras where he became fluent in Spanish.

He earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Missouri and then a law degree from Harvard. So he has a solid educational resume for a Senator.

Kaine is most accurately described as a progressive with a hint of conservative values. Remember Virginia is a purple state that is trending blue in recent elections, but it is far from solid blue at this time. While reasonably fiscally conservative fighting for fair housing and advocating for the homeless has long been causes Kaine has been associated with.

He is a friend of public education including pre-K at the same time this gun owner favors reasonable gun regulations. His stances on guns – which the vast majority of American gun owners agree with – have earned him an F rating from the NRA.

Kaine is an advocate for both veterans and currently serving military personnel. In my mind those are American values that must transcend political philosophy!

Kaine has a history of not letting his personal or religious beliefs influence his performance in his government jobs. He personally opposes abortion but supports the Roe v Wade decision. He personally opposes capital punishment but allowed executions when Governor of Virginia. In other words he understands the separation of church and state in the First Amendment to the Constitution and also respects the rule of law.

A few of his Senate votes include voting for Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, Manchin-Toomey and the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

On the policy end he supports same sex civil marriage (along with LGBT issues in general), DACA, the normalization of relations with Cuba, and the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Kaine has a somewhat mixed record on the environment but he is far from a climate change denier or nutcase. That and the fact that he is not exactly a man who displays a firecracker personality are the two biggest knocks on him. Donald Trump has a personality the size of which is only exceeded by his unwarranted large ego and we see where that is getting America.

A huge plus to me is that Kaine is pro-union with a 96 (out of 100) rating from the AFL-CIO.

If you live in Virginia I urge you to vote, volunteer for and contribute to (if you can afford it) Tim Kaine. If you live elsewhere and are looking for an out of state Senate race to get involved with Kaine’s is a viable option.
