We could have quite a debate as to who is the worst governor in America running for reelection in 2022, but no doubt Greg Abbott of Texas would be high on that list. While it may be a bit outside, there is a chance he can be knocked off even in an “off year” election.
The Democratic nominee is Beto O’Rourke and even if his Republican opponent was acceptable, he would still be who the smart and informed people in the Lone Star State were voting for.
Beto has become a solid progressive in a red turning to purple state. Academically he is an alum of Columbia. Pretty solid in that department. Columbia is an Ivy League school who counts Barack Obama among its graduates.
In recent years he has been one of the bravest and most vocal supporters of gun safety laws. Recently he challenged Abbott at one of the Governor’s show news conferences. In response to mass shootings in Texas Abbott has led the charge to loosen gun laws in Texas.
During his time in the House of Representatives O’Rourke earned 100 ratings from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America. Recently Texas Republicans passed and Abbott signed into law one of the most radical anti-choice laws in America. I don’t know about the women you have met in life but the ones I, and apparently Beto have, possess functioning brains.
O’Rourke favors comprehensive immigration reform including protection for Dreamers. He wants to modernize our visa system to match the needs of business including a fair path to citizenship. Recognizing reality; what a concept.
Beto’s post-secondary education policy addresses issues that few candidates are courageous and practical enough to touch. He supports not only 4 year programs but the roles community colleges and trade schools can play. He advocates programs where young graduates can exchange service in hard to recruit to areas for student debt relief.
Texas is a large and diverse state with a few huge metropolitan areas, small towns and rural communities. O’Rourke recognizes and respects the unique needs of all of them. Texas has a large Hispanic population. O’Rourke’s given name is Robert but he has gone by Beto for decades. (For the record this is not an economic background issue. He grew up a rich, white boy.)
America has about 5% of the global population and over 20% of its prison population. Those numbers alone tell you there is something wrong. From my experience the largest problem by far is private prisons. O’Rourke wants to eliminate them. The benefits to society of doing that are numerous, impactful and obvious to anyone with critical thinking skills.
Without any hint of a reservation tellthetruthonthem.com endorses Beto O’Rourke for Governor of Texas and hopes for the upset!
