Progressive Sweeping I

Finding a title for my cleanup articles is often one of the most difficult things I do. Today I think I finally stumbled on a both good and accurate one. Typical of a progressive, I want to “sweep” issues before the eyes of the public. The other side tends to sweep their sins under the rug and out of the sight of all but the most well informed. While it may be incomplete, it is “good sweeping” (yes, the inspiration for that phrase comes from the late John Lewis), expect to see that title used again and often. Sneaking Up On You

Today America commemorates Juneteenth as a national holiday for only the second time. I’m willing to bet it will sneak up on a lot of Americans who wonder why there is no mail and many offices are closed. I will offer that it is a day to be cognizant of our political environment and not let something insidious sneak up on us.

Suppression And Intimidation Supplemented By Nullification

Mainly at the state level the Republican Party has been engaged in voter suppression for decades. Of late they have moved into voter intimidation. Ironically they learned both from, among other sources, the Democrats of the Jim Crow era. Now they are unveiling their final tactic – voter nullification. The scariest part is that the general public seems to be completely unaware of that.

Gavin, Harry And Larry

California being California it will take some time before the final numbers are in but Wednesday morning’s papers all told me that Gavin Newsom prevailed in the recall election by a huge margin. Gavin executed a strategy articulated by Harry Truman in 1948 and was more crudely put by me over the course of the last two decades or so.
