2022 Progressive Of The Year
Not for the first time the Progressive of the Year may be a surprise to some. It certainly requires a bit of outside the box thinking. He is not even an American. I certainly don’t know if he would consider himself to be a progressive. All that said, he more than anyone else in 2022, was the most ardent defender of democracy and if that isn’t the core value of a progressive, I don’t know what is.
A Lot Going On
A lot has been going on over the past few days. The British got a new Prime minister, Queen Elizabeth passed, Charles became the King of England, (if anyone thinks that UK news falls on deaf eyes and blind eyes in America, they haven’t been paying attention), the NFL regular season started and Trump investigation/scandal number “hey, even I lost track” broke; just to mention a few. In that storm it is easy to lose track of the war in Ukraine but that would be a mistake.
… But Remember
Joe Biden is unpopular even with many who voted for him in 2020. Much of this is understandable when you consider that the average American really doesn’t have much of a background in civics and certainly lacks the time and too often the interest to follow politics closely. Most voters can tell you the name of the starting quarterback of their favorite NFL team and his backup but not the names of their state representative, state senator, state Attorney General or state Secretary of State.
Allowed To Win Whatever That May Be
When the current version of the war in Ukraine started almost three months ago the thought of Ukraine winning would have been considered outrageous. Today not so much. That leads me to ponder just what winning means in this situation. One thing is for certain: Ukraine is not the master of its own fate.
