Yes, It’s That Bad
By the time you read this we will most likely have 80,000 American deaths attributed to the coronavirus (that number is a severe undercount). The American justice system has problems and the current regime is exacerbating them. There has long been a disparity between the prosecution and punishment for white collar and other crimes. It is now to the point that Trump connected or condoned white collar crime goes unpunished. Unemployment is officially at Great Depression levels and increasing. If that weren’t bad enough we know the reporting system is such that the numbers do not include all the unemployed many of whom have not been able to access an overwhelmed system. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate Majority Leader, called his chamber back into session last week not to address any of those problems but to push often unqualified Trump nominees through. A Matter of Poor Priorities
I have consistently written that the most difficult social problem facing America today is immigration. That is not to say that it is the only or that past challenges (i.e. racial equality) are totally resolved and gone forever. The balancing act between, the practical, the legal, the humane while staying consistent with both American values and history is challenging to say the least. Regardless of where you are on the continuum of the political spectrum we all want America to be secure. The problem is largely one of where to draw the line. Fictional Fright
A few days ago I finished reading Sinclair Lewis’ 1935 novel It Can’t Happen Here. I have a policy against putting works of fiction on the Recommended Reading list or it would be a candidate. Most of my reading is non-fiction and most of that nerdy. Once in a while I need a break and indulge myself with a novel.
