I’ll start today by paraphrasing the 1966 Buffalo Springfield song, For What It’s Worth: there’s something’s happening there, but what it is ain’t exactly clear. Yevgeny Progozhin’s Wagner Group, (which is basically a private “mercenary” army largely composed of freed Russian non-political prisoners), has turned on Vladimir Putin and the Russian military and is now reportedly marching on Moscow. That’s a thumbnail version, the situation is extremely dynamic and reliable reports out of the region are close to non-existent. I had other plans for today’s article’s subject matter but needless to say, that changed.
Commenting about the war in Ukraine is a scary proposition. I feel whatever I write will be dated by publication time. It’s moving fast and not in a good direction. I can’t help but feel it is going to get both worse and more complicated before it is over.

Very late last week NBC reported that the sum of money Paul Manafort received from Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch with extremely close ties to Vladimir Putin, now amounted to $60 million. The Trump campaign and Donald Trump in particular, repeatedly and vehemently denied any collusion or coordination with Russia during the 2016 campaign or the subsequent transition.
