I have to begin this piece with a word of credit and thanks to Steve Brodner who, in his opinion piece of January 2, 2024 in the Washington Post entitled, These politicians denied democracy on Jan. 6. Now they want your vote., did much of my research work. As of this writing there are 147 Republicans who voted not to certify the electoral college results of the 2020 election despite overwhelming evidence to the back up said results and even after they were attacked by domestic terrorists earlier in the day on January 6, 2021. Several have been implicated in complicity in the planning and/or execution of the illegal events of that day. By virtue of this vote, all 147 of them are in my opinion and that of many, many others, at minimum, accessories after the fact.
Republican Representative George Santos of New York was expelled from the House of Representatives on Friday of last week. The vote was 311-114-2-8. This was the third attempt at expulsion, (keep in mind that Santos didn’t take his seat until January of this year). I’d like to list the 112 Republicans who voted to keep Santos in office. 8 (split 5-3 Republicans to Democrats) did not vote; I’ll comment one on. Then I’d like to explore the motivation for some of the votes. (Even a political junkie like me isn’t comfortable ascribing motivations to many of the back benchers.) Totally perplexing to me are the two Democrats who voted “Present”.
Timestamp: Mid-Saturday afternoon.
The timestamp was necessary because of the opening comments with the main message to follow.
Dateline: The late morning of Wednesday January 4, 2023. Yesterday the 118th House of Representatives arguably went into session. Republican “control” is already proving chaotic!
81 years ago today the United States experienced a sneak attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The next day Congress declared war on the perpetrators. December 7, 1941 wasn’t the last time that the United States was blatantly attacked; but December 8, 1941 was the last time it declared war on the perpetrator of said attack. While I won’t diminish my respect for the rank and file of the Greatest Generation, their leaders weren’t up to the standards of the masses and today it’s even worse. It will be worth your time to read on!
