California Girls

Call most modern American women “girls” and you are understandably in trouble. The exception to that rule is if the word “girls” is proceeded by the word “California”. Today I’d like to talk about a couple of California girls – one actually from Massachusetts via Oklahoma – and a California boy. (Hey, I’ve got to be consistent. There is a generational aspect to this verbiage: My baby boomer wife has lunch with the ladies; my greatest generation mother got together with the girls.)

The Anti Democracy Party

On September 21, 2022 the House voted on the Presidential Election Reform Act. Basically, it plugs many of the loopholes that Donald Trump tried to exploit to overturn the free and fair election he lost in 2020. The vote was 229 in favor, 203 opposed and one not voting. Nine Republicans joined all 220 Democrats who voted in voting for the resolution. The nine Republicans who also voted for democracy are all leaving Congress at the end of this term. All 203 of the other Republicans (most of whom are on the 2022 ballot) voted against the resolution and in the process American democracy.

Here We Go

Next weekend is Labor Day weekend and the unofficial opening of the 2022 “regular season” for politics. A lot has changed on the political landscape since the last time I took a look at the prospects for the 2022 Senate races and I thought it merited another look.

Not So Hidden Evil

By this weekend I expect the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will have passed the House and been signed into law. On right wing media a plethora of disinformation will be disseminated telling us that the sky is falling because the Democrats spent too much money. In mainstream and left leaning media the message will be that the legislation will solve many of our problems. As usual, one portrayal will be much, much closer to reality. Today I want to bring light to a somewhat lost “battle within the battle”.
