Today’s Senate Shapshot

While when we get to the bottom line not much has changed since the last time, I felt it was time to take another look at the 2024 Senate races. The biggest change I made was to add a new category.
The basics remain the same. The Democrats enter the contest with a one seat “lead”. If the new race ends up in a tie control goes to whichever party wins the White House (despite the polls I still favor Joe Biden and thereby the Democrats but only by the thinnest of margins). The Republicans have 11 seats to defend and the Democrats 23.

The 4 Point Play

“That’s a four point play. The two they got and the two we didn’t get.” That was my old high school basketball coach back in the 1960s yelling at us for committing a turnover in practice. He was slightly incorrect in that it was statistically unlikely (and he was a math teacher) that we or our opponents would have scored on either possession but his point was still well taken. I remembered it during my coaching days and it is also applicable to the Electoral College. Today I want to incompletely explore that last part.

A Highway To Hell

Since at least the 1964 election (Operation Eagle Eye) the Republican party has been the party of voter suppression. I thought when the decision came down on Monday that the biggest American political story of the week had occurred. With the value of the subsequent history, I wasn’t wrong. It didn’t get a lot of press but the potential is both huge and almost inevitable to be reached!
