Today’s article is a tale of two stories. One told to me in the Summer of 2012 about an event in the 1960s; the other read in the newspaper last weekend of recent events. One takes place in North Carolina, the others in New Mexico. I contend they are at their core largely one in the same.

The Anti Democracy Party

On September 21, 2022 the House voted on the Presidential Election Reform Act. Basically, it plugs many of the loopholes that Donald Trump tried to exploit to overturn the free and fair election he lost in 2020. The vote was 229 in favor, 203 opposed and one not voting. Nine Republicans joined all 220 Democrats who voted in voting for the resolution. The nine Republicans who also voted for democracy are all leaving Congress at the end of this term. All 203 of the other Republicans (most of whom are on the 2022 ballot) voted against the resolution and in the process American democracy.

The biggest American political story of last week received almost no coverage. Being an Easterner I’m not sure I even have the right to write about it. I certainly lack much in expertise and experience. But an old man is going to write about a river anyway. The story is much, much bigger than just that body of water. In fact, water is the key word.

Sneaking Up On You

Today America commemorates Juneteenth as a national holiday for only the second time. I’m willing to bet it will sneak up on a lot of Americans who wonder why there is no mail and many offices are closed. I will offer that it is a day to be cognizant of our political environment and not let something insidious sneak up on us.
