SPECIAL NOTICE – RECOMMENDED READING ADDITION

I just added Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism by; Rachel Maddow to the Recommend Reading list.   In it Dr. Maddow explores the history of the right wing/Nazi sympathizers in pre-World War II America.

The shocking parts is that they largely got away with their dastardly deeds and what is going on today is largely the same with just a different “cast”.

A Few Observations From Across The Atlantic

As an op-ed writer I’m entitled to express opinions but they should mostly be based on at least better than average knowledge of the subject matter at hand. I’d like to think I adhere to that “rule”; today will be a bit of an exception. That does not diminish the importance of some of my observations nor excuse you from giving them thought.

With Poetic License – A 2023 Equivalent

In my mind the decisive battle of World War II was D-Day and today is the 79th anniversary of the landing on the beaches of Normandy. Nazi Germany was trying to destroy democracy anywhere it existed on the globe certainly including in America. The Nazis wanted to replace democracy with right wing authoritarianism. The clearest threat to American democracy today is the American radical right wing which has largely taken over the Republican party. I think it’s most potent attack on democracy was thwarted last week. But we are far from out of the woods and I’d like to briefly explore that topic today.

A Landing

Today is Memorial Day, the day we set aside to honor our war dead. (All veterans are honored on Veterans’ Day in November. Today is set aside for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.) Perhaps it is taken from the Christian principle of hate the sin but love the sinner, in any event I’m a believer in respect the warrior regardless of what you think/thought of the war. As I told a friend of mine with survivor’s remorse, nobody cuts their own orders.
