Yesterday I added Surviving Autocracy by Masha Gessen to the Recommended Reading List. The book is much more than just another Trump basher!
Where I often use the term “Organized criminal enterprise” in my writing Gessen uses “Mafia State”. Gessen compares Trump to autocrats of the past and present in this work with particular attention paid to Vladimir Putin who she has cover in her work as a journalist.

If you are looking for an insight into Russian history of the late 20th and thus far into the 21st century it is well worth your time. It also gives you a lens by which to view recent international political events.
I’m not alone in my praise for Gessen’s work; the book won the 2017 National Book Award for non-fiction.
