If you will accept my counting Palestine (I have to give Gaza a name) and Yemen as countries, as of this writing fourteen counties are to some degree involved in the current conflict in the Middle East. They are: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, The UK, The USA and Yemen.
Some are more involved than others. My list is based on open source information. How many countries, if any, did I miss? Are there any other(s) who are involved but their involvement is not publically known?

I don’t think I’ve ever began an article with a thank you but today it is appropriate. During her Monday night show, Rachel Maddow reminded me that it was the 40th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon which took place on October 23, 1983. 241 American servicemen, mostly Marines, died in that attack. Tragic as it was there is so much more and I’d like to explore a bit of it with you today.

I’m one of those people who, left to my own devices and remaining in my comfort zone, take forever to get going in the morning. Sunday morning was typical. I had just gotten out of the shower and turned on the television not quite ready for the activities of the day. The image that greeted me was of a protester confronting a paramilitary force in an urban environment. My immediate thought was that I was seeing a photo of a demonstration from a west coast American city that took place late the night before. I was wrong. The picture was from Beirut, Lebanon.
