It Happened Here

I remember last summer watching a BBC broadcast of the results of the Brexit vote come in. The panelists could not hide their surprise as they accurately speculated the final tally would be for the UK to exit the European Union. I was also surprised and amazed that a country as advanced as the United Kingdom would make such a blunder. In the back of my mind was the fact that there would only be two viable candidates to be the next president of the United States in November and that one of them was the outrageous and unqualified Donald Trump. I kept thinking that my fellow Americans could not make such a foolish choice; but then again I feared they could. Just into the wee hours of November 9, 2016 it became apparent that Donald Trump would defeat Hillary Clinton for the presidency. Almost a month has passed since that morning, the reality has really sunk in and the horror show is about to start. It happened here. Continue reading It Happened Here

Slowdown On The (Br)exit

In any other week this would have been my Sunday article which I often reserve for the biggest political story of the preceding week. Alas, I’m an American and the Election is Tuesday. Potentially the biggest thing that happened in global politics this week was the UK’s High Court ruling that declared Parliament must weigh in if the UK is to leave the European Union (EU). Here is the really strange part: it may not have any long-term effect at all. Let’s explore. Continue reading Slowdown On The (Br)exit

My Wife’s Funny Story

Decades ago my wife broke a glass ceiling and was the first woman at a large financial firm to reach the level of management that she did. In that position she had to attend many regional and national meetings. For years she was the only woman at the conferences. She still jokes that the biggest advantage is that she had the bathroom all to herself. That always got laughs at a party. Today it makes me think of some things that are happening in global politics. Continue reading My Wife’s Funny Story

No Exit Brexit?

The title of this article is almost an oxymoron. The very term Brexit is a combination of the words “British” and “exit” implying the UK would exit the EU. Remarkably just one week after the fateful vote by the populous to exit it appears the exit could possibly never take place. Continue reading No Exit Brexit?

European Dreamin’

I’m not a world traveler. In fact I’ve never been outside the northern half of the western hemisphere. I haven’t left the United States since 9/11 (although that is coincidental). Even when in America almost all my time is spent in the Eastern Time Zone. About ten years or so ago the idea of traveling to Europe began to intrigue me for the first time in my life. Much of the credit for that must be given to the novels of Dan Brown and the late Steig Larsson. Continue reading European Dreamin’
