In one of his books the late Lee Iacocca stated that the American voters should demand that presidential candidates disclose who would be in their Cabinet if elected. Iacocca may have had some talent at selling Mustangs – more likely he was in the right place at the right time – but he was totally naïve (I’m being kind in my choice of words) when it came to being a major party presidential candidate. Major party candidates cannot disclose who would serve in their Cabinet and on their senior staff for a multitude of reasons; but op-ed writers can put out wish lists based on real world considerations. Am I Supposed To Be Upset?
People tend to leave administrations between the mid-term election and New Year’s Day of the following year. For many two years of high level government service is enough. They may well want to get out of the pressure cooker or simply cash in via the revolving door. I haven’t done a study (and don’t intent to) so I cannot unequivocally state whether they are leaving the Trump administration at a greater rate than normal. Considering the positions that were never filled (mainly because Trump never bothered to nominate or hire someone in the first place) and all the previous departures I have to guess the Trump exodus is on the high side. The bottom line is that this administration has served the nation more poorly than perhaps any of its predecessors. There are several hotspot countries that don’t even have an American ambassador because Trump never bothered to nominate one. My question is just how concerned I should be about the departures. The Endorsement Of Kyrsten Sinema
Tuesday night Arizona released its primary results and they should produce one of the most interesting and pivotal Senate races of 2018. Republican Jeff Flake’s retirement created an open seat in a state that while still red is certainly trending blue. Both parties selected their most electable candidate and both are women in what is looking like a year of the woman. Both are currently serving in the House. This should be a horse race where the Republicans are defending a seat that is one of three best pick-up opportunities for the Democrats who need to flip a net of two in order to take control of the upper chamber of Congress. In researching Democrat Kyrsten Sinema I found, as expected, a somewhat left-leaning moderate. To my surprise I discovered a much more interesting than anticipated candidate from the personal profile standpoint. In fact she may be the prototype Democratic candidate if they want to win in places they haven’t had historical success and appeal to the increasing pool of voters who reject party labels. Amongst The Distractions
The news last week was dominated by the Trump administration’s handling of the refugee crisis on our southern border, Trump bragging about how great he is (his big example was what he considers to be his great achievement with Kim Jung-un) and Melania’s jacket. In short, Trump created the crisis, he got his behind handed to him in Singapore and I really don’t care what the First Lady wears because she is largely irrelevant.
