81 years ago today the United States experienced a sneak attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The next day Congress declared war on the perpetrators. December 7, 1941 wasn’t the last time that the United States was blatantly attacked; but December 8, 1941 was the last time it declared war on the perpetrator of said attack. While I won’t diminish my respect for the rank and file of the Greatest Generation, their leaders weren’t up to the standards of the masses and today it’s even worse. Today is the Georgia Senate runoff election so almost every political junkie will be talking about the Senate. I’m going to do it too but with a different twist. I want to take my first look at the 2024 Senate races as they stand at the moment. I think that when all the dust settles in the Peach State Raphael Warnock will be returned to the Senate and the Democrats will control the chamber 51-49. Today’s article will primarily be a wrap up of the 2022 Governors’ races. Then just to prove (as if my regular readers needed proof) that my mind keeps going off into unusual political places I have a nerdy tidbit well worth reading about.
Tuesday Takeaways
The biggest American political event of the week just ended was the 2022 elections. I could have scheduled that one a year ahead of time. That said, this is another timestamp article and I am commencing to write this on Thursday morning. There are many takeaways and I’d like to relay a few of mine to you today.
I Almost Feel Sorry For Mitch
I almost feel sorry for Mitch McConnell. Only almost.
Understandably Mitch McConnell wants to be Senate Majority Leader again. Going into the 2022 election and needing to only net one seat you can see why he felt that could happen. (Here is the scary part: it still may.) Had the GOP recruited and gotten their number one draft choices through the primaries it would be all but a lock. That is not what it looks like less than a month from Election Day.
