There is an old Polish proverb that basically says that what you say when you are drunk; you speak the truth. (I’m not going to try to quote it. I neither read nor write Polish and have a toddler’s speaking vocabulary in it. Typical American – English only.) While I’m confident Joe Biden was sober when he spoke in Warsaw on Saturday, he did speak the truth; a truth that few want to publically admit.
He adlibbed near the end of his speech when he, speaking of Putin, said, “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.” As the war in Ukraine enters its second month it is becoming increasingly apparent that one man, Vladimir Putin, is driving the Russian effort and that he personally must be stopped. I am of the school of thought that he must be removed by the Russian people, not by an external force. Western sanctioned outside assassination would probably be close to impossible and is ill advised. I could see Putin ending up being a dead hero and his fantasy of the West trying to “cancel” Russia would only be reinforced. One way or another he has to be taken out of power from within.
Joe Biden is a smart and very experienced guy. He is not a genuine genius. Cory Booker and Pete Buttigieg were the two Rhodes scholars vying for the 2020 Democratic nod. For a moment I’d like to compare Biden with the last two Republican presidents in their relationships with Putin. George W. Bush said he looked into Putin’s eyes and saw his soul. Trump idolized and I think envied Putin. I am among those who feel Putin was one of his adored role models. Biden is calling him out for what he is.
W. is infamous for the 16 words in his 2003 State of the Union address. They were a lie. If he were paying attention to his intelligence briefings (a bold assumption) he should have known that. Biden slipped 9 words into Saturday’s speech and told the truth, uncomfortable as it may be.
Back during the 2012 campaign another Biden slip accelerated a major social change in America. On a Sunday talk show he expressed his support for same-sex civil marriage. He got out ahead of President Obama’s public stance but spoke the truth and sped up the process.
It is apparent to me that if the free world wants to remain democratic and free Putin has to go. I hope history repeats itself in that a Biden gaffe facilitates a just end. On Saturday, Biden spoke the truth in Poland.
