…Or A Drag Queen With A High Heel

Last weekend the big news was the 601st mass shooting of 2022 in America. I didn’t major in math in college but that is about two a day on average. America has a gun problem and we are doing way too little about it. America has a gun culture which is difficult for much of the rest of the world to understand. I accept that, and in some ways am part of it. That doesn’t mean we must have a gun problem. The two are not mutually inclusive.

Just about as the midnight hour struck on Saturday night a 22 year-old, white, male gunman armed with an assault style rifle and a pistol entered a nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado and began shooting. It seems that his intended targets were members of the LGBTQ+ community simply because they were members of that community. Is that really any wonder considering the Republican Party, as part of its effort to win elections and get out the vote, has continually demonized (to the point of outright lying) the LGBTQ+ community for years?

We have reason to believe that many of the patrons in the club that night were cisgender heterosexuals. They were there to accompany and/or support friends and/or to watch the entertainment which included a drag queen show. As of this writing there are five fatalities. We have no reason to believe that several of the victims were LGBTQ+. There are many people – and I’m proud to be one of them! – who simply accept good people for who they are regardless of things like sexual orientation, identity or presentation. Personally, I feel we need more good people and I could care less which bathroom they go to at the ballpark or who they love!

The shooter, who reports as of this writing identify as over 6 feet tall and weighing over 300 pounds, was wearing body armor. A decorated retired Army Major tackled him, disarming him of the rifle. The Major then grabbed the shooter’s handgun and began pummeling him with it on the unarmored and accessible portions of his body. The Major, who was there with his family, was joined by a drag queen who commenced hitting the shooter with a high heel. As of this writing the shooter is still in the hospital.

No single gun law will solve America’s gun problem. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plug the loopholes in our existing laws, enforce them and supplement them with common sense regulations. Survey after survey shows that an overwhelming majority of the American people want gun safety laws enacted and enforced. When are voters going to start rewarding the advocates of said laws and punishing their opponents at the polls? Until they do this will not change.

A few years ago, Wayne LaPierre of the NRA had a great line, “The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” I guess we can add an unarmed retired Army officer defending his friends and family or a drag queen with a high heel.
