Is The UK OK?

Perhaps a Yank should just keep his mouth shut when it comes to UK politics. I was a talker as a little boy in school and keeping my mouth shut has never been one of my strong suits. The UK is arguably America’s most important ally. It is a major economy and a global leader. Simply put, it is important!

The UK is on its third Prime Minister of 2022 with the ascendency of Rishi Sunak to the office. It started the year with the international embarrassment, Boris Johnson, at number 10 Downing Street, Liz Truss took the helm for 44 days and now Mr. Sunak. Truss’ term was as unique as it was a disaster. Her financial plan, (modeled after the efforts of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan), was her undoing and she almost crashed her country’s economy in the process. For the record (and guidance for my American readers) Republican House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, and former Trump advisor, Larry Kudlow, praised it comparing it as virtually identical to the current Republican Commitment to America.

Without getting into the weeds of the parliamentary process of selecting a Prime Minister in the wake of Truss’ resignation announcement Johnson briefly attempted a return to power. Speculating over it The Financial Times U. S. National Editor, Ed Luce, likened it to, “A dog returning to its vomit.” Johnson was an advocate of Brexit which is the root of almost all of the UK’s economic problems. To put it in simple terms, Johnson actually thought the UK – who was already getting a huge advantage – would get a better deal from “the club” as a non-member. In what universe is that logical? Is it any wonder that Russian interfered helping the exit side win. Remember that Putin wants to weaken or destroy both the EU and NATO.

I certainly don’t know how successful Mr. Sunak will be but for the sake of the free world I wish him luck. I’d like to see Parliament dissolved and a new national election but fully understand why the Conservatives won’t do that at the moment. Spoiler alert: they would get their hind ends handed to them.
