If You Can’t Beat Her; Put An Open Hit Out On Her

With 21 words Tuesday Donald Trump took American presidential politics to its lowest level in history!

Tuesday morning I did my usual perusal of the Washington Post and in the process read Eugene Robinson’s piece where he wrote that while not sure of the particulars he felt the campaign was going to get worse before it was over. In a few hours his hunch became reality when Donald Trump uttered the following to a crowd in Wilmington, North Carolina. “If she gets to pick judges, nothing you can do folks. Although the Second Amendment people – maybe there is, I don’t know.”

The “she” was Hillary Clinton and Trump was warning the assembled that she was going to revoke the Second Amendment and take their guns away. Donald, did you see that video before, after or between the videos of the dancing Muslims in New Jersey on 9/11, and the money being unloaded in Iran? Despite the spin provided to him several hours later by Fox News’ Sean Hannity what Trump did plain and simple was advocate the assassination of Hillary Clinton. This was all too reminiscent of Sharon Angle’s “Second Amendment solutions”.

While Trump’s speech pattern is so rambling that he is often difficult to follow, this message came through loud and clear. Trump certainly doesn’t sound like an Ivy League graduate; not even one that transferred in.

The last thing America needs in this political cycle is the assassination of any presidential candidate! We are a representative democracy not a banana republic! Apparently that fact is lost on Trump. Perhaps that is part of the reason why he doesn’t realize America is currently a great country. If any political candidate at any level is assassinated this cycle the blood is on Trump’s hands (regardless of their size). While I’m certain the majority of Americans join me in that moral view I only wish our laws reflected that and people who incite killing could be prosecuted as if they had personally pulled the trigger! This situation bears a close resemblance to an open Mafia hit contract.

I am certain that I am not alone in feeling Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly is complicit in the assassination of Dr. George Tiller. O’Reilly contends that his repeated on air references to the doctor as “Tiller the baby killer” are unrelated to the incident.

In this incidence I have to think Hannity, (who by all accounts is personally a nice guy), would share some guilt because he provided the spin Trump was unable to generate himself or with the aid of his staff and kids. Instead of holding Trump accountable, Fox News whitewashed the statement. Fair and balanced? How about being accurate and honest?

The only silver lining I find in the cloud is the political reality Trump finds himself in. Four years ago I wrote that Mitt Romney was in trouble because he was still consolidating his base in August. Trump is in much deeper trouble; he is consolidating his primary base in August.

It is frightening to think that we still have about three months to go to Election Day. How much lower can this guy go and when will people stop covering for him?
