Greatest Hits: The Most Dangerous Threat – Revisited

Please note: This article was originally published on August 16, 2015. Since then it appears the term alt-right has become the most popular term used to describe the extreme right wing element that I still firmly believe is the most dangerous threat to America. They are here and show no inclination of leaving. The only thing they have done over the years is change labels, grow and take further control of one of America’s two great political parties.

The radical right wing of the Republican Party, more commonly known as the Tea Party, is the most dangerous threat to America today. That is a pretty bold statement and believe it or not I toned it down.

Today is August 16th. The Jade Helm 15 military exercise has ended. Led by Alex Jones, one of their chief conspiracy theorists, the Tea Party element had been warning people prior to the exercises’ commencement that it was a secret Obama plot to invade Texas. The last time I checked Texas was part of the United States so how a country invades itself is somewhat bewildering to me. Of course I think in logical and non-racist terms. Remember the Tea Party’s take our country back rhetoric started after America elected a black President for the first time. I’ve said it for years: if Obama were white there would be no Tea Party. If Texas was invaded it must have been accompanied by a news blackout.

In 2013 the Tea Party element spurred on by Texas Senator and 2016 GOP Presidential wannabe Ted Cruz forced a government shutdown in an effort to repeal Obamacare. Obamacare survived, as we all knew it would. The shutdown cost the American taxpayers $24 billion.

Two weeks from today the federal government’s fiscal year ends. Congress must pass and the President must sign either a budget or a continuing resolution to keep the lights on. While the exact outcome and how we get there is in doubt this much is certain; it won’t be a budget.

The boogey man this time is Planned Parenthood. The Tea Party element is vowing not to vote for any agreement that leaves any federal funding for Planned Parenthood intact. Again Cruz is the defacto leader of the movement. Both House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell know that the votes to defund Planned Parenthood simple do not exist and they also know that a government shutdown will hurt the Republican Party politically. Cruz is only concerned about enhancing his chances in the Republican primary and figures this “principled stand” is a way to gain the support of primary voters.

There have been allegations of wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood. I lack the time and space to fully discuss them all here and now. The recent tapes were heavily edited to the point of being misleading and when the 12 hours of supposedly complete tapes were analyzed they also turned out to be edited.

Another myth about Planned Parenthood is that they use federal tax dollars to fund abortions. This would be a violation of federal law and has been disproven more often than Donald Trump tells us how smart he is. In fact abortions only account for about 3% of Planned Parenthood’s total budget and none of that money comes from federal funds.

The Republicans will frame this fight as an attempt to protect women when in reality it is just part of their war on women. They are using them as pawns in their game to get Obama regardless of who gets hurt in the process. This is a clear example of racism hurting us all, not just the “targets”.

If Republicans really want to do something to help victimized women how about funding a program to process the 70,000 rape kits that are backlogged in laboratories and law enforcement agencies around the country? Perhaps 2012 Tea Party/Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin provides us with the answer to that question. He made the original, “Legitimate rape,” comment. In his explanation he talked about how rape kits act as sperm selectors. Sorry Todd; wrong on both counts!

The main reason for obstruction in Washington is the Tea Party and the cowardly reaction of the rest of the Republican Party to it. They are letting the inmates run the asylum. Obviously I am prejudice but I can’t point one positive thing the Tea Party has done for America, however I can point to a lot of ways they have harmed it and they are trying to do it again.
