Donald The Unfit!

Plain and simply Donald Trump is unfit to be President of the United States! His ignorance of history (the nuclear triad), international relations (NATO) and the role of the executive branch in our system of government (I, alone can solve this) is astounding and terrifying! Here is the really scary part; those are not the disqualifying shortcomings I want to discuss today.

Recently Jane Mayer wrote a piece in The New Yorker, where she is a staff writer, which encapsulated interviews with Tony Swartz and her subsequent follow-up investigations. Time for a little background; Mayer is a well-respected journalist who has broken several stories about the influence of money in politics most notably her recent must read book, Dark Money. Swartz was the ghostwriter, (his name appears on the cover of the book), of Donald Trump’s 1987 book The Art of the Deal. Arguably the book put Trump on the map outside New York City in the late ‘80’s. He still refers to at almost every rally as proof of his business and negotiation superiority.

In order to write the book Swartz spent considerable time with Trump and inevitably got to observer him up close and personal. While the stories in the book are largely Trump’s – which means we have to wonder how many were embellished – the writing is almost exclusively Swartz’s. This conclusion is more than merely my believing Swartz. Pulitzer Prize winning writer Eugene Robinson has said that he conducted a phone interview with Swartz and Trump simultaneously and they both stated that Swartz did all the writing; (Trump is now denying that).

Swartz claims that Trump is temperamentally – and (by my interpretation) cerebrally – unfit to be President. Let’s look at a few Swartz quotes, from Mayer’s work, speaking of Trump. “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will end civilization.” “He has no attention span.” “…it is impossible to keep him focused on any topic, other than his own self-aggrandizement, for more than a few minutes.” “If he had to be briefed on a crisis in the Situation Room, it’s impossible to imagine him paying attention over a long period of time.” “Lying is second nature to him. More than anyone else I have ever met, Trump has the ability to convince himself that whatever he is saying at any given moment is true, or sort of true, or at least ought to be true.” “He lied strategically. He had a complete lack of conscience about it.”

When in the process of writing the article Mayer called Trump, his reply included the following. “He didn’t write the book. I wrote the book. I wrote the book. It was my book. And it was a number one best-seller, and one of the best-selling business books of all time. Some say it was the best-selling business book ever.” (For the record: it was not the best-selling business book of all time.) Howard Kaminsky ran the publishing firm Random House at the time the book came out. While laughing he told Mayer, “Trump didn’t write a postcard for us!”

I guess it all comes down to who you believe. You can choose to believe Donald Trump. I choose to believe Jane Mayer, Tony Swartz, Eugene Robinson and Howard Kaminsky. My conclusion is that Donald Trump is unfit to be President!
