… But Remember

Joe Biden is unpopular even with many who voted for him in 2020. Much of this is understandable when you consider that the average American really doesn’t have much of a background in civics and certainly lacks the time and too often the interest to follow politics closely. Most voters can tell you the name of the starting quarterback of their favorite NFL team and his backup but not the names of their state representative, state senator, state Attorney General or state Secretary of State.

A few months back I ranked the presidents of my lifetime except for Biden. The jury is still out on him and to a degree so am I. To rank him now would be like counting a win or giving up on a game before halftime. This much I know; we are much better off under Biden than we were under his immediate predecessor. It’s not even close!

Trump was twice impeached and with the benefit of hindsight should have been removed from office. His, and the Republicans’, “big achievement” was a tax cut that did nothing to stimulate the economy and went almost exclusively to those who needed a passport to visit their money. Oh, I forgot about the lady Paul Ryan, (Mathematical “genius” that he is), bragged about whose annual tax savings almost paid for her Costco membership.

Then we have Trump’s handling of the (luckily for him and us!) only crisis he faced – the pandemic. With less than 5% of the world’s population and arguably the greatest scientific and medical “machine” in history we had 20% of the global cases of COVID-19. That necessitated several stimulus packages and caused massive unemployment.

Impeachment number one was centered around a shakedown phone call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As part of it he withheld military aid from Ukraine. You have to ask if that didn’t make Russia think it was in a stronger position and contribute to the current conflict.

Racists, xenophobes and misogynists loved Trump. He announced his campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and murderers. While still campaigning, he called for a Muslim Ban. Under him – and with a huge assist from Mitch McConnell – three Supreme Court justices were confirmed who, to date, have overturned Roe. I’m sure they are not done – more on that below.

His most glaring example of racism was his “Good people on both sides” comment in the wake of Charlottesville. Of course, he would need some of those same domestic terrorist before his reign of terror was over.

Like most Americans I have forgotten how many documented lies Trump amassed in those four dark years in American history but I remember it being over 30,000. Keep in mind that is in well under 1,500 days and doesn’t count the lies that could not be documented as such when uttered.

Trump closed out his first (and hopefully only!) term with the insurrection on January 6, 2021. I guess the Proud Boys listened when he told them to “Stand back and stand by”. The Trump 2020 campaign: proud sponsor of domestic terrorism.

But incomplete as it is, enough about how much better America is under Biden than Trump. Biden is not on the 2022 ballot but democracy is.

Trump is currently the leading contender for the 2024 GOP presidential nod. Politics being what it is that may not hold. However, the alternatives look worse in my opinion. Some of the leading contenders to steal the nomination from him are just as evil but, unlike Trump, are also smart. For example, recently Ted Cruz stated that the Supreme Court was, “Clearly wrong” in the Obergefell decision which legalized same sex civil marriage in America. If you think the right wing extremists who control both the current Republican Party and Supreme Court – is there any difference? – are done after overturning Roe you haven’t been paying attention.

You can be disappointed with Biden. I can actually understand that a bit. You can hate him. You can’t make a case for that but it’s a free country – for now at least. I just beg that you remember how bad it was, what direction the Republican want to take us in and the damage they have already done when you vote this fall.

As a lot, Americans are a nation that is both quick to forget and to forgive. Just don’t forget to vote and don’t forget who your real enemies are. We ignore the forces of evil at our own peril. Remember most democracies die from within.
