As I often state, my biggest problem is not finding something to write about; it is deciding which topic to write about. Today’s article is a perfect example. I haven’t been off the planet since Friday; I simply had other pieces scheduled. Friday a video tape broke of Donald Trump making comments about women that I cannot quote on this site and still maintain my PG rating. Today I’d like to comment on the tape and Trump’s subsequent actions.

The tape captured a 2005 conversation between Trump and Access Hollywood host Billy Bush. Like The Apprentice, I have never watched Access Hollywood. In fact I had never heard of Access Hollywood or Billy Bush prior to Friday. As it turns out Bush is a cousin of George W. and Jeb. I’m not putting forth any conspiracy theories. You would have to believe President Obama was born in Kenya and the Hawaiian birth announcement was a plant in order to believe a conspiracy theory here.

Trump’s initial defense was that it was an old, private conversation consisting of locker room talk. In other words boys will be boys. Let’s examine that. While I don’t necessarily want to hold a youthful indiscretion against an adult candidate – George W. Bush’s great line of “When I was young and irresponsible; I was young and irresponsible” comes to mind – Trump was nearly 60 years old in 2005. Having just exited that point in life a few years ago, I hardly consider that his youth. As to private conversation; Trump knew he was wearing a microphone. Only a dimwit (perhaps I solved the mystery) would fail to consider that the microphone could be live. I spent 15 years coaching high school and college basketball. That entailed overhearing a lot of locker room conversations. They were certainly peppered with four letter words and there were references to sexual encounters. However, by the time my players were of college age bragging was non-existent and details were only added on the rare occasion that something particularly exotic occurred during the encounter. I never heard a player brag of committing a sexual assault. My college players were in their late teens and twenties. Trump didn’t even display that level of maturity. This has nothing to do with using politically correct language. It has to do with having the maturity of a college freshman.

Under tremendous political pressure from fellow Republicans, (and I hope at least some among his staff), Trump eventually released a video tape “apology” just after midnight. It looked more like a hostage tape than anything else. Trump was obviously angry. In the “apology” he never mentioned his third wife of eight months, Melania, who was pregnant at the time of the incident. A few seconds into the ninety second “apology” he went into a portion of his stump speech and then on to attack Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Boy is the term for a child or adolescent male, not an adult male. Perhaps Trump has a point with the boys will be boys defense. We need an adult not a child in the Oval Office. I dread to think how Trump might act toward a female foreign leader he considered sexually desirable!
