A Holiday Card

If you were going to cast a production of A Christmas Carol the easiest role for me to play would be that of Ebenezer Scrooge. I’m basically a bah humbug guy. I certainly don’t get all excited and emotional over Christmas and that has absolutely nothing to do with religion. I got something in the mail the other day that made me stop and think for a minute. Let me share my thoughts with you.

I was opening my mail and there was an envelope with the simple return address of The White House Washington, DC 20500. Enclosed was a holiday card from the Obamas. I had the privilege of working for the President (at a very low level) in 2012 and have been on his Christmas card list since. I don’t know if its ego or emotion but I have to admit it makes me feel good. At any rate I opened the envelope and looked at the card. The cover is a family photo of the President, First Lady and their two daughters. The thought that overwhelmed me was they aren’t little girls anymore! They are two young ladies. What a nice family and what a wonderful image for America to project around the world! The President is dressed in a tuxedo, flashing his winning smile. The female Obamas are all in gowns and looking elegant in a respectable, not gaudy way.

I thought a bit longer and reflected on all the good this good man has accomplished and tried to do for mankind during the last almost eight years. I played an extremely small role in his reelection but it is one of the things I will be proudest of for the remaining days I have on this planet! Then the warm and fuzzies came to an end.

In just over a month Obama turns the Oval Office over to Donald Trump. I won’t be getting holiday cards from him but that is of no concern to me. To be honest I wouldn’t want them. The problem is I genuinely fear what a Trump presidency could be!

Trump is unqualified for the job and seems to have no desire (or perhaps insufficient attention span and comprehension capacity) to prepare himself for it. Increasingly he is surrounding himself with incompetents and those with personal agendas. He refuses offered help from those who actually know what they are doing and what is going on.

Trump is a very wealthy man (although it appears he regularly overstates his wealth). Yet his greed appears to be insatiable. It reminds me of the scene in the movie Wall Street where the villain defends greed and is asked, “How many yachts can you water-ski behind? How much is enough?” I can understand a person who steal to feed themselves or their family; someone who scams the helpless or naïve just to get money they don’t really need is another thing.

For those of you thinking Obama is wasting your tax dollars sending me a card it was paid for (including postage) by the Democratic National Committee (DNC). I’m going to try to enjoy this holiday season in large part because I’m unsure when I’ll feel this comfortable with my President again.
