I generally write articles at least one day ahead of publishing. When I woke up Wednesday morning I had two different ideas for Thursday’s article. After reading the papers option three won and the others will have to wait for another day.

Very late Tuesday afternoon the House suspended the rules and voted on a measure entitled: To award four congressional gold medals to United States Capitol Police and those who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. By suspending the rules a two-thirds vote was required for passage; that’s how much of a no-brainer voting aye was. The measure passed but 21 Republicans (and I hate to legitimize them by calling them Republicans!) voted nay.

The 21 are: Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Michael Cloud, Louie Gohmert and Chip Roy of Texas, Andrew Clyde, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Jody Hice of Georgia, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Matt Gaetz and Gregory Steube of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia, Andy Harris of Maryland, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Mary Miller of Illinois, Barry Moore of Alabama, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, John Rose of Tennessee and Matthew Rosendale of Montana.

I’m not big on medals, trophies, certificates and the like but can you think of a more deserving group? I know it would be a dereliction of duty, but could you really blame any member of the Capitol Police if they somehow conveniently failed to see an attack on any of the 21? The fact is whether they realize it or not some or all of the 21 might well not be alive today if it hadn’t been for the efforts of the Capitol Police on 1/6.

Let me just take a brief look at a few of the 21. Matt Gaetz will be lucky to stay out of prison let alone keep his seat in Congress in the long run. Louie Gohmert seems to be a man in pursuit of a brain cell. Paul Gosar actually says that the Capitol Police murdered one of the domestic terrorists on 1/6. Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks that because a political party had the word “socialist” in its name it was a socialist party, and she doubled down on that. Conservative and crazy are not synonyms and these people are not conservatives. And those are just off the top of my head.

The 21 reference is to the card game blackjack; one of the few I know much about. The ultimate is to combine an ace with a ten, Jack, Queen or King for Blackjack which is an automatic winner. The other automatic win is five cards under 21 which of course is impossible when drawing 21 cards. There are no aces in this collection of 21! I find this vote disgusting and disqualifying. If you vote for any of them in 2022 – or at any future time for that matter – you are part of the problem!
